3 Good Questions For Wedding Photographers

It can be a long and extremely selective process to find the wedding photographer that is right for you. That is why it is important to ask the right questions so you can determine the right company for the job. After all, if a few simple questions will help you capture the beauty of your precious moment then it is definitely worth taking the time to ask them.

The three questions that should be most important are:

1. Do you have a portfolio?
2. Can you provide recent and positive references?
3. How intrusive is your photographic methodology?

The first two questions are fairly obvious but the third is probably one of the most important and is hardly ever asked. The last thing you want is to be tripping on your photographer through your entire wedding or having the photographer distract your guests.

As an example, I recently attended a wedding where the head photographer was literally bird calling to the guests to try and take the right shots. Now maybe it's just me but I don't like to be bird called to for attention to begin with let alone while I am trying to appreciate some good food and good music. I most certainly would not want to experience it as the bride or groom!

When it's time for you to select your wedding photographer keep those questions in mind. Hopefully they will save you some of the hassle and headache that I have seen other couples experience. Good luck and choose carefully!

Making Money With Wedding Photography

Have your friends have told you how good your photography is? Are the prints you create appreciated by friends and family? Have they have suggested that you start your own wedding photography studio? If so, you may be asking what is your next step? Well, with a little help, you can get started in your very own business.

Wedding photography can provide you with an excellent income, either full or part time. Wedding photography has been the catalyst for many of the top professional photographers. Doing it for yourself of course, means that you get to keep all the money. But, please note that as the photographer, you will often be required to act as the wedding coordinator as well, as these days, most brides cannot afford one. And if there is no wedding coordinator, then it is usually the wedding photographer who will make sure everyone is where they should be most of the time. The downloadable course is designed to help you in all aspects of the days event. As the wedding photographer, you need to make sure that the bride and groom follow your directions. Make them aware that it is in their interest to follow your directions because they want a whole lot of great looking photos for their album.

As you prepare for an event, you need to make sure that all your equipment is ready, and that you have everything you need for the days event. If possible, be sure to have a series of back-ups, a spare camera body, a spare lens and a spare flash in case any of your prime units fails. You should always be prepared so that you never haver to come up to the bride during a wedding and try to explain that you equipment just broke and you cannot take any photos. Again, a death sentence. Your back-up units do not need to be identical to your prime units, but they should be at least close to the same specs. The camera needs to be able to take images at the same resolution as your prime camera, otherwise there will be a noticeable difference in quality of the final prints. The flash unit can be a smaller unit with a slightly lower light output, but if it happens, then this unit will have to do quite a bit of work, so be careful. Make sure that the spare flash is fully charged before taking photos. I have seen a number of photographers get excited about taking some pictures at an event, and they will often just fire away, taking picture after picture, not realizing that the flash is not fully charged for each picture, and so, most of the resulting images will have serious problems, that may not be able to be recovered on the computer. So, make sure that you have good back-up equipment.

Let me ask you, are you ready to take the next step? If you love photography and working with people, the let me ask you if you are ready to start your own wedding photography business? Then you will find that the wedding photography course is designed to get you off to a great start. Everything is in this course, including all the forms you will need. Business forms are provided for you as a computer file that you can edit and personalize to give them your very own identity. This alone will help you and your business look very professional and save you a lot of time and money, so you can get bookings and start making some money with your very own wedding photography business.

Thinking Outside The Box With Artistic Wedding Photography

Your wedding day is one of the most special, eagerly awaited days in your life; and often we spend a great deal of time and money to ensure that it is perfect in every way. Everything from the flowers to the food is given careful consideration in an effort to plan a cohesive and exciting event that is reflective of your personality. And nothing is more scrutinized than the photography - that which will be a lasting memory of your special day. Today's sophisticated brides and grooms are looking to artistic wedding photography more and more - as a way to infuse their wedding with non-traditional style.

Artistic wedding photography is photography that is approached with more than just "stand and pose pictures" in mind. Gone is the day of formal - and often stiff - wedding photography. Today's photographers have ushered in a growing trend wherein they bring creative expression to the age-old craft of wedding photography.

Some methods included in artistic wedding photography may include the use of non-traditional angles that you may have never associated with wedding photographs - including the use of light, color, shadow, and scale. A creative photographer can create dramatic work of art out of a single photograph and present you with a photographic result you can frame and hang in any room.

An increasingly popular style of artistic wedding photography is that of candid - or journalistic type - photography. Using this method, the photographer takes photographs of the couple and their guests when they are unaware of the picture being taken. Photographers who are adept at this have an uncanny ability to stay unnoticed and still get beautiful, engaging shots.

Artistic wedding photography may also include the use of the computer to add design elements to the photography in order to make them unique. The choices are really endless when it comes to creating photographic works of art. Working with a photographer who can best express the style that is unique to you and your wedding means finding one that works at a higher creative level than traditional wedding photographers. Luckily, most photographers host their own website where visitors can browse through their work and get a sense of their style.

Having a wedding does not mean that you are stuck with traditional vendors and formality reminiscent of your mother's wedding. Infuse your wedding with modern sophistication by choosing artistic wedding photography. The memories will last you a lifetime.

Choosing Contemporary Wedding Photography For Your Big Day

Your wedding day is a day that will live in your memory for a lifetime; but it will also live in the pictures captured throughout your wedding ceremony and reception. Choosing a photographer for your wedding is more than deciding who you want to be with you throughout the day; it's choosing the style in which you want your wedding pictures to be presented. And many modern brides are choosing contemporary wedding photography.

Contemporary wedding photography is defined by a modern approach to a traditional custom. While traditional wedding photography often captures a conglomerate of formally posed pictures, contemporary wedding photography often focuses on a more journalistic style of capturing photos. The result is a more candid style of photography that often captures moments that traditional photography tends to miss.

Gone are the days of wedding photography by the numbers. Today's wedding photographers are showcasing their talent, creativity, and specialties like never before. This puts consumers in a beneficial position - creativity abounds in the wedding photography market which means that you are only limited by your imagination when it comes to creating unique and exciting wedding albums. But in order to realize your dream, you must first find a photographer experienced in contemporary wedding photography.

There is no better wedding planning tool for brides than other brides. Conduct your own informal research among friends who have recently gotten married or are planning their own nuptials. Take notice of other couples' wedding photography; if you like a particular style then ask for a recommendation for their photographer.

Of course price is always a consideration when it comes to tackling big ticket items associated with weddings. Be sure that you approach each photographer you interview with a solid budget in mind - and stick to it! Contemporary wedding photography allows for non-traditional needs and requires flexibility on the photographer's part; you'll be surprised how much room there is to negotiate on price.

Most importantly, be sure that the photographer you choose completely understands what you want from your contemporary wedding photography. Ultimately the wedding photography that will work the best is that which accurately reflects the unique personalities of the happy couple.

When Building An Oc Photography Business, Don't Reinvent The Wheel

There are many industries where success is had by doing things that have never been done before. Companies like eBay created an industry that never existed before. It had to be completely innovative in order to survive. The Orange County photography industry is much the same way. Although over the last 100 years there has been vast technical improvements, at the end of the day the client is still looking for a beautiful image.

Those who try and reinvent the wheel in every aspect of a photography industry will fail. They will be out serviced by those who follow the tried and true activities that work. This doesn't mean there isn't room for innovation. The digital age has changed the way Orange County photography work is completed. It simply means the photography industry is mature. Those who succeed in this industry are those who are best able to implement best practices. The following is a list of best practices that have proven to be successful for thousands of photographers over the years.

1. Build and protect your reputation. Unlike the buying and selling of commodities, the purchasing of photography services is based on reputation and word of mouth recommendations. By building your reputation you will soon find you are being sought out for more jobs and are able to demand higher prices.

2. For the most part, especially if you provide wedding photography services, the majority of your marketing will be towards women. My experience has been that women between the ages of 21 and 45 are still the largest consumers of photography services. While gender roles have changed greatly over the past 100 years, the bulk of your clientele will likely be women. If you do choose not to market to this group, make it a conscious decision. Not one made in ignorance.

3. There are better margins at the top of the market. The growth of thousands of photography businesses can be described as follows: Talented photographers provide quality services. He markets his products. Demand increases. Photographer increases prices. Photographer increases quality. Demand increases further. Photographer raises prices again. This is a tried and true pattern to a successful photography business.

By implementing your business based on these tried and true ideas you can avoid mistakes and follow the pattern that has led thousands of others to success.

Newport Beach Wedding Photography V. Newport Beach Portrait Photoraphy - Pros And Cons

There are a number of pros and cons a professional photographer should consider before deciding whether to or not to expand grow his business by seeking out weddings or seeking to do more portraits.

Pros of wedding photography v. Portrait Photography are as follows:
In wedding photography there is less of a need for a studio. Renting or purchasing studio space is a major expense for any photographer. If that photographer focuses on weddings, he is less likely to need to rent out studio space since the very nature of shooting a wedding demand that it be on location. Wedding photographers are often asked to shoot engagement portraits as well. While on occasion a couple will ask for an engagement session in a studio, the majority of engagement sessions are done out-of-doors. Hence a photographer who focuses his business on weddings can avoid a studio expense. For the rare occasions when a studio is needed, the photographer can simply rent a studio.

A professional who focuses on portrait photography will be far more likely to need a studio. This is particularly true for those seeking to shoot high school seniors. High school seniors often want a combination of both studio and outdoor location shots. This customer desire would make it difficult for a photographer to base his business on portraits, particularly high school portraits, without adding the expense of a studio.

As far as revenue per event, wedding photography often has a higher floor. Couples realize that their wedding is often a once in a life time opportunity. As a result they and their family plan on spending more for a wedding than, for example, a typical family photo shoot. This rule only applies to typical family shoots.

The downside of a once in a life time opportunity is there is a higher stress and liability level to weddings than there is for a family shoot. A family shoot can almost always be rescheduled lowering the liability level if something were to go wrong. Also, a wedding requires more precise timing. It is imperative that the photographer is at the right place at the right time. Missing a key ceremony shot is not an option. These requirements for weddings create a longer typical shoot and more stress.

The shooting of both weddings and portraits sessions can be lucrative and rewarding. However a professional photographer should evaluate the different advantages and disadvantage of each before deciding on the direction he will take to expand his business.

Classic Wedding Photography

To get classic wedding pictures, one should get the best wedding photographer they can afford. In wedding photography one can choose to have traditional pictures taken or have their photos taken in a reportage style. Another person may opt to mix the two styles. What matters is that the quality of the pictures. If the person resides in Toronto, they can choose to have a Toronto wedding. Once a person selects the venue, the next big decision concerns the wedding photography. To get great pictures of the memorable day, it is advisable to shop around for the best Toronto photographer. This is done by getting a phone book and comparing prices of the different photographers who deal with wedding photography. Some may be cheap while others will charge exorbitant prices for their wedding photography. The best choice would be to settle for one whose prices are affordable.

Another factor to consider in the wedding photography is the length of time it will take to get the pictures developed or printed. The wedding photographer should give one a date when they should expect their photos. Just like Toronto weddings, a good wedding photographer will impart lasting impressions on anyone who looks at the pictures. This will help one know how a particular studio handles its wedding photography. Talking to the photographer also helps someone to know the language used in photography circles. It is also helpful since one can ask as many questions as possible about wedding photography.

Friends and relatives can also advise on the best wedding photography options. They can recommend photographers who take good wedding pictures. They also give advice on the various wedding poses and prepare one for what to expect on the wedding day from the wedding photography. Wedding photography is an art that requires skill and experience. It would be advisable to get a Toronto photographer who has worked for at least two years, as they know how to capture certain moments to get classic wedding photographs. They can also advise on the best poses one can use and make use of the lighting when doing the wedding photography.

Reading the wedding photography contract before signing is important. One gets to know if all costs are inclusive or if there are going to be additional costs. Contracts spell out what the photographer will do for specified amounts of money. Selecting a studio to handle wedding photography is not easy. The process should be started early enough because a wedding day is one of those days when memorable moments are made. Wedding photos should capture those joyous moments.

Wedding photography might be expensive but when one considers the story the pictures will tell, they will choose the best wedding photographer who will bring the best out of that important day. It is an investment of the future and one should not forget a picture is worth a thousand words. Choosing the best studio for the wedding photography will ensure than the couple does not regret when looking at the wedding photos later.

Current Trends in Wedding Photography

Wedding photography is an evolving field that requires artistic talent, vision, and highly technical expertise.

In the past wedding photography was almost always limited to stiff posses without much regard for the underlying story, emotion, romance, and behind the scene events of the wedding day.

Although there is still a big segment of the wedding industry that practices traditional photography with its preplanned poses, and recreation of the wedding peak events such as the kiss, the ring exchange, etc., the modern wedding couple demands a more contemporary approach to their wedding day.

Wedding photojournalism has been in vogue for the past decade. The central idea behind it has been the capture of the wedding events without any interference or direction from the wedding photographer. The photographer is there to capture the true essence of the wedding day. As a result of this realistic approach the photographs are a true representation of the wedding day. Hard core wedding journalistic will be totally opposed to posing any wedding related event. If it doesn’t not happen during the wedding it won’t be recorded. This includes family group photos.

Several photographers offer a hybrid approach to wedding photography, usually a combination of traditional and journalistic wedding photography. In this approach the photographer focuses on documenting the wedding day but the coverage also includes a session with the couple for formal posed or semi-posed photographs and also family group photos.

The latest trend in wedding photography is toward a more fashionable approach. Inspired on high-end fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, GQ, American Photo, etc., and wedding magazines the photographer seeks to make the couple’s fantasies real.
In the fashion wedding photography approach the goal is to make the wedding couple look their best. Their romantic interplay is glamorized to its maximum expression. The everyday couple becomes like wedding celebrities. Attention to detail is required to achieve the perfect look. This approach requires a great deal of artistic talent behind the camera and also great computer image editing skill to produce a unique photo. Half the photo is made on the camera with the second half achieved though digital image editing and manipulation.

Which style is best, is for you to decide. In our experience a big segment of the wedding couples want to capture the reality, details and romance of the wedding day but at the same time they have fantasies about their wedding and the way they should look.

When making a decision for a wedding photographer look closely to the photographer’s portfolio and see how it agrees with your philosophy on how your wedding day should be photographed. Regardless of your philosophy please make sure that you select a master of the craft, you and the next generation deserve masterpiece memories of your wedding day.

The Biggest Marketing Tool in Wedding Photography Business

There are many ways to advertise your upcoming new business in photography, but there is nothing that beats Online Marketing.

Here are only a few reasons why not having an online presence is a very bad move in the photography business.

  • Most of the brides start their search by looking on internet.
  • Most of the time people will search for your business online even if they are discussing with you offline.
  • Your competitors are already having a website and can advertise on your business name too.
  • A business without a website raises eyebrows.
  • New generation brides and grooms are much more internet savvy and want similar vendors.

Having highlighted the negatives, let me tell you some of the benefits of having a website in this particular business.

  • You will have your own internet based business, as well as an official business email (not a free email like yahoo or gmail).
  • You can put your entire portfolio online. This can include your best pictures, wedding albums of past clients. You can also create online slideshows with music effects to look way better.
  • You can use free online marketing ideas like joining community sites, blogging and interaction in forums. You will build more contacts that will bring you additional revenue.
  • You can utilize paid online marketing options like Google Adwords or banner advertising to drive more clients to your website.
  • You can list your business on online yellow pages and directories. Some of these options are free and will bring you more clients and recognition.
  • You can list yourself on online maps and local listings that are gaining prominence with GPRS enabled devices and search engines.

Those are some of the key benefits. However, there is something more that makes websites the biggest marketing tool to wedding photographers. The key to this marketing strategy lies in the fact that wedding photography business is still predominantly a local business. Most of your clients will come from your area and city. Most of the photographer's don't like to travel either. As such it is quite easy to find your clients. But on Internet this is even more easier. Modern online advertising technology allows you to pick clients from a very specific location down to the block level. This means that you can show your advertisement to people who are living close by. Also, certain online agencies allow you to pick people based on demographics, so your advertisement can be shown only to people of right gender or age. Think of it this way, you can place your ad right before prospective brides looking for a wedding photographer. No other tool available there allows you to so precisely pin point your prospects and show them with the right advertisement. You can only imagine the response rate such a strategy will generate.

If you haven't already done so, get a website now. I also recommend you to learn more of internet based wedding photography marketing strategies. Nick Smith's e-book Digital Wedding Secrets has some amazing wedding photography business ideas. He is also providing readymade website and hosting for your wedding photography business. Camera Clubs - The Alternative Marriage Photography Service

Want to know a unique way of saving money when it comes to Wedding Photography? Employing amateurs might sound like a risky business, but there are fanatical people out there who love their chosen hobby. These fanatics, or more appropriately enthusiastic amateurs, are amongst the most knowledgeable people on the planet when it comes to photography. They are most likely to have all the gear necessary to capture your special day for a fraction of the price.

Please don't think that all amateurs will be able to fulfill the job description. Just because your Uncle Jack has purchased the very latest all singing all dancing digital SLR will not guarantee that he has the passion or the enthusiasm, it just means that he has the spare cash to buy the latest bling accessory!

Where do you look to find these talented and enthusiastic amateur photographers? The ones that can think out of the box artistically and creatively, and the most likely to have a passion for photography that far exceeds the skills for a wedding. All of the above can be found at your local Photographic Association Camera Club.

Associations are normally county-wide and consist of associate members, or camera clubs who may be local to your town or region. These camera clubs are filled with just the sort of photographers who have the right attitude and equipment to set up part-time wedding photography businesses. Camera clubs often have competitive meetings with other camera clubs in their region.

Inter-club rivalry helps to keep the photographers focussed on the quality of their work. They will be looking out for conflicting or clashing backgrounds, they will be looking out for where the light is coming from, its intensity, its quality. They will know the types of lens and power of flash to use for changing conditions indoor and in the great outdoors. Most importantly they will be looking for pleasing compositions for your shots. Many clubs hold regular studio nights so that they can learn the effectiveness of studio lighting with model portrait photography.

Prices for weddings charged by photographers who do it part time and belong to camera clubs can be as much as a third the price of a full time professional. In the U.K. it is not unusual to be quoted £2000 for forty photographs and a DVD, whereas the savvy part-time photographer will only charge £600 for the same package with two passionate photographers to cover your event.

As soon as an amateur charges for their work, they have to apply a professional label to their enterprise, and adhere to the same tax and DVD license purchase as any other professional. The difference is that they are part time professionals who care and love their hobby that much more and who would love to work with you to create the perfect wedding story in photos for your album and DVD.

Many of these amateurs hold down a day job, so they may only be available for evening or weekend weddings. Those that will assist you for a weekday wedding may have to charge slightly more to cover their loss of annual leave from their day job. Either way you are sure to be surprised by the difference in prices charged by the full time professionals.

The author - Glen Diamond, is one such enthusiastic amateur who has recently set up a part time wedding business with a few other photographers from his camera club. http://www.professional-wedding-photographer-kent.co.uk is one such organisation that employs enthusiastic amateurs for part-time wedding photography in a caring and professional manner.
